The Dark Story Behind Amazing Grace | John Newton's True Story

Millions have sung Amazing Grace. But few know the extraordinary and troubling story of the man who wrote it.

Before John Newton became a Christian minister and wrote one of the most beloved hymns in history, he was involved in the transatlantic slave trade.

In 1748, a violent storm at sea brought him face to face with death. He cried out for God's mercy — but his spiritual awakening did not immediately end his involvement in the slave trade.

His journey would take years, marked by contradictions, faith, repentance, and an eventual public stand against the very trade in which he had participated.

In this Christian historical documentary, discover the true story behind Amazing Grace: John Newton's early life, the storm that changed his understanding of God, his years as a slave ship captain, his ministry, his connection to William Wilberforce, and the legacy of a hymn that continues to touch hearts around the world.

This is not a story about a perfect man.

It is a story about the seriousness of sin, the depth of God's mercy, and the responsibility that comes with repentance.
